Robert's Story

Notice his face, where his emotions shows, if you feel connected, how quickly your notice the story, key words.

Sutton: How is your body after reading that?

Robert: I feel vulnerable

Sutton: Do you have a sense of where do you feel the most connected with the story?

Robert: When mommi came in bleeding

Sutton: I feel the terror and confusion for that boy. I care to know what yo notice?

Robert: this was a murder. It was the murder of my heart. It makes me angry and confused. I am kind of stuck in that in a way. 

Sutton: yes you said that several times. Did you notice that?

Robert: Yes.

Sutton: Your grandmother is reaping your heart out with glee and excitement. There is a sinister excitement in your grandma's happiness for what happened.

Robert: Well, I realize she was not that noble after all. In Filipino culture it is forbidden to talk back to elders.

Sutton: So it takes guts to even tell the story and to let the story exist.

Jorge: I

Robert: I feel more anger. that my hate is justified.

Sutton: Yes, this is another layer to your story that is beyond the story itself.

Martin: I feel you wished this never happened to you.

Robert: Yes, I wished it never happened.

Joseph: I want to affirm your anger Robert....

Sutton: Go with that ... how do you feel about this boy with this urgency to protect his mom.

Robert: anguish, sadness.

Sutton: I even noticed you felt confused in the story.

You meet Lydia and something is not right. Dad should be protecting your mom, you should not have to. I want to grow into manhood. You said that several times. But you did not have a good example. 

Robert: Yeah

Sutton: What is coming up for you?

Robert: I am beginning to feel more compassion for my younger self. 

Sutton: can you locate that compassion in your body?

Robert: I feel heat emanating from my palms.

Sutton: I kind of have this pressure that is expanding.

As a 9 year old boy your are the masculine man in the story. There is beauty in that and there is grief in that because you did need to be that in the story.

Where have we been cursed in the story? Repentance for me is actually the trust that I can use my voice. What is a actual step towards reclaiming this boy?

Robert: I feel like telling my mom that I am so sorry that she had to experience that. I do not know if that is repentance (kindness), but I feel tenderness for my mom.

Sutton: And you are not supposed to speak about that. Telling the story is turning the point and blessing the boy.

Sutton: Where are you right now?

I am at an 8 right now.

 We spoke about ritual and now important it is to organize therapy around ritual to make it predictable and recurrent. Joseph in hiding a prostitute was creating a trauma bond. Our sexual lives are the truest part of our lives. Because they reveal our deepest desires. a neurobiological imperative is to be touched. So the abused feels the lack of care, connection and play that makes us accessible. The abuser reads our longing. Touch is a survival need. When mom and dad do not satisfy that need and an abuser does.  And how is that evil. You have to honor how your need was paired with sex for you to survive.
